Asset Allocation

Diversify with Asset Allocation

Asset allocation is a systematic method to diversify your portfolio holdings into proper assets and securities. Diversification is a method that aims to reduce your risk by distributing your overall portfolio to different asset classes, sectors, and categories. It helps you to achieve better return by allocating your assets into different financial instruments. However, it’d never guarantee against loss. Nevertheless, it’s an effective and practical way to reach your financial goals while minimizing risk.

Efficient Diversification
 I
f diversification seems to be vital for a successful investing, it begs to know how much of diversification is enough? If you have $100,000 at your disposal to invest, would you buy 10, 20, 100, 0r 1000 stocks? If holding 10 stocks would reduce your risk, would holding 1000 stocks do it better?  Well this question has been asked by academia. There is a wide body of research papers on this topic. The overall conclusion has been there is a ceiling which could produce an optimum result for diversifying into different stocks or assets.

Asset Classes

Assets are resources with economic value owned or controlled by an individual, company, country, or any other legal entities. They could be grouped into different asset classes. Each group or class of assets share similar characteristics and exhibit comparable behavior. By clustering and assembling them together, financial planners and advisors could develop better understanding about groups and utilize them properly and more effectively. Although members of each asset class share similar and general traits, they may have their own individual differences like volatility, dividend yield, etc. Conversely, each asst class could be grouped into smaller sub-asset classes.

The primary asset classes are; cash, bonds, equity, physical assets and property.
